Unlock Your Inner Latino: 5 Surprising Steps to Belong and Make Friends Abroad!

Living in a new country can be exhilarating, but it often comes with challenges like loneliness and homesickness too. Here, we’ll explore six key steps to help you integrate into the local community, make friends, and truly feel at home as you embark on your journey to become a Latino. In case you are wondering the key is one word: “blend.”

Understanding Latino Identity

In the first place and before we delve into the steps, it’s essential to understand what it means to be a Latino.

We are a rich blend of pre-Hispanic indigenous heritage and Spanish influence. In other words this mestizo heritage is the foundation of our traditions, culture, and way of life, shared across more than 20 countries. It’s a common thread that connects us, even when we’re far from our home countries.

Ultimately being latino is to be warm and love life.

1. Embracing the Language Barrier

One of the most common challenges is the language barrier. For English speakers, non-Latin Europeans, and Asians, learning Spanish can seem daunting. But after all here’s the key: don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Latinos appreciate your efforts and are more than willing to help you become comfortable speaking their language. Taking lessons and participating in language exchange meetings can boost your confidence and language skills. Also, try to learn some local slang; it will make you sound more local and help others feel familiar with your way of speaking.

Learning a new language is more than just memorizing vocabulary; it’s about immersing yourself in a new culture. It’s essential to embrace the local way of life, even if it’s different from what you’re used to. For example, Latinos are known for their warmth and affection. Greetings often involve hugs and kisses, even among new acquaintances. We value family deeply, often living in multigenerational households. Adopting this cultural perspective can help you feel more at home.

While these practices might initially seem unfamiliar, remember the saying, “You Only Live Once” (YOLO). So, don’t hesitate to dive in and try to emulate the Latino way of life.

If you’re eager to dive into the language and immerse yourself in exciting cultures, you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re delving into the captivating list of top-notch countries for learning Spanish and embarking on unforgettable experiences.

Across the globe, there are 21 countries where Spanish is an official language. However, not all offer the same learning experience. Some may have intricate dialects or variations that make understanding challenging. But fear not, there’s no “perfect Spanish,” as each nation has its own linguistic identity brimming with idioms and distinct features.

Despite these differences, we share around 90% of the same language and manage to understand each other.

With this perspective in mind, let’s kick off our journey through this exciting list!

Spain – The Birthplace of Spanish

Our journey begins in Spain, the birthplace of the Spanish language. What better place to immerse yourself in the language than its place of origin? The way Spaniards speak is personally one of my favorites, but for beginners, it can be a challenge.

This is partly due to the use of “Vosotros” instead of “Ustedes,” which can lead to confusion, especially between Latin American and European Spanish.

What Awaits You in Spain?

From the vibrant streets of Barcelona to the historic charm of Seville, Spain offers a rich history and a wide variety of accents and dialects to explore. What better way to enhance your language skills than to surround yourself with native speakers while immersing yourself in everyday Spanish life?

Iconic landmarks like the Alhambra, Gran Vía in Madrid, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona await you – truly emblematic of Spain! Below, you’ll find a video of these places to spark your inspiration.

Mexico – Adventures and Culture

If you’re looking for a unique cultural experience while learning Spanish, Mexico is the perfect destination for you. From the bustling streets of Mexico City to the charming beauty of Oaxaca and the paradise beaches of Cancun, this country offers a diverse range of places that will immerse you in its culture, history, and exquisite cuisine.

The Spanish spoken in Mexico is notably neutral, making the learning process easier for beginner students. Especially in Mexico City, the Spanish is among the clearest in the region. Undoubtedly, it’s a highly recommended place to learn the language and dive into its rich culture.

And who can resist the delectable Mexican cuisine?

What Wonders Await You in Mexico?

Mexico is one of the most diverse and culturally rich countries in the world. From breathtaking ruins to enchanting “magical towns,” and a cuisine that’s a true gem, this country offers unique destinations unlike any other. If you’re seeking a complete cultural experience and wish to immerse yourself in local life, Mexico is the perfect place for you. Here a video to see what awaits you there.

Colombia – Warmth and Charm

Colombia has become a popular destination among Spanish learners thanks to its warm and hospitable people.

From my perspective, it’s an outstanding destination for intermediate students or those with some prior experience in learning Spanish. This is because Colombia boasts distinctive and diverse accents. What do I mean by this? In certain regions of Colombia, the Spanish language and accents vary significantly.

For instance, in Bogotá, the capital, a more neutral accent is employed, while in Medellín, you’ll hear a more melodious tone. Additionally, “tú” is replaced with “vos,” and there are variations in some accents, especially in the imperative form. This particular accent is known as “paisa.”

However, I believe the greatest challenge lies in the speed of Colombian Spanish.

What Awaits You in Colombia?

Cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena provide a friendly environment for learning, while allowing you to explore historic sites, natural wonders, and enjoy stunning beaches. One of the most amazing places to visit and explore is the Coffee Cultural Landscape (Eje Cafetero), along with the Parque Tairona and the idyllic San Andrés Islands.

Argentina – Accents and Tango

In Argentina, you won’t just have the opportunity to improve your Spanish – you’ll also immerse yourself in the charming Rioplatense accent. This destination is definitely for advanced students who want to start getting to know and learn new accents.

The Rioplatense accent has its own unique grammar, especially in intonation. They also switch “tú” for “vos.” Additionally, they frequently use the imperative mood compared to other Spanish-speaking countries.

What Experiences Await You in Argentina?

Buenos Aires, known as the “Paris of South America,” offers a vibrant cultural life, filled with theaters, museums, and lively nightlife. Moreover, Argentina, much like Brazil, is one of the most football-passionate countries in the world. If you’re seeking a unique experience, attending a football match is an essential activity.

Additionally, cities like Mendoza are famous for their wine production. If you’re keen on exploring unique places, you can’t miss Ushuaia. Known as the “city at the end of the world,” it’s a one-of-a-kind destination that will leave you speechless.

Peru – History and Nature

Can you imagine learning Spanish while exploring ancient ruins and natural wonders? Peru is the perfect place to do just that! The Spanish spoken in Peru is quite neutral, and much like Mexico but with Quechua influence, this country is a true cultural gem, making it an incredibly attractive destination to immerse yourself in the local culture.

What Wonders Await You in Peru?

Cusco, the ancient Incan capital, offers you the chance to refine your language skills as you marvel at the breathtaking archaeological wonders of the region.

Nazca will leave you in awe with its imposing lines etched into the ground, visible only from the air. And let’s not forget places like Lima, the capital, where you can discover the modern side of Peru.

Additionally, Lake Titicaca will allow you to experience one of the most traditional aspects of local indigenous cultures. A true cultural adventure awaits you at every turn!

Bonus: Ecuador – The Hidden Gem

It’s possible that for many of you, this name may not be very familiar. But have you heard of the Galapagos Islands? Yes, they’re in Ecuador! It’s understandable if you’re not familiar with them, as they’ve only gained popularity among tourists and especially those looking to retire in South America in recent years.

Ecuador presents itself as a fabulous destination to learn Spanish, whether you’re at basic or advanced levels. The accent, especially in Quito, is surprisingly neutral. In fact, they’re often mistaken for Mexicans due to their lack of a known accent.

In Quito, thanks to the growing number of foreigners, there are numerous Spanish schools offering their services, particularly for those planning an extended stay in the country.

What Wonders Await You in Ecuador?

Known as the “country of the four worlds,” Ecuador boasts four markedly distinct regions despite its relatively small size.

From paradisiacal beaches to unique Amazon rainforests and unparalleled biodiversity, Ecuador is a country of exceptional contrasts. Add to this a large Andean region with majestic volcanoes and towering mountains.

And let’s not forget the Galapagos Islands, a marvel unlike any other in the world! Furthermore, we’re proud to be home to the world’s highest capital city, with Quito situated at 2800 meters (9186 feet) above sea level.

If you’re looking to learn Spanish and immerse yourself in a natural adventure, Ecuador is definitely the place for you. Venture into this true paradise!

How to enjoy learning Spanish: Easy ways to overcome frustration!

How to enjoy learning Spanish: Easy ways to overcome frustration!

Hola, mis queridos lectores! Learning Spanish can be an exhilarating adventure, but let’s be real—it can also be frustrating at times. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! I’ve been there myself while learning English. After 12 years of studying it at school (yes, in Ecuador English is mandatory since pre-k, but the language education isn’t always top-notch), I arrived in my first English-speaking country only to realize I knew nothing. I was a complete John Snow when it came to English, hahahahah (If you saw Game of Thrones you will understand).

In this blog post, we’ll explore practical strategies and advice on how to overcome those moments of frustration and keep your Spanish learning journey fun and enjoyable. So, grab a cup of coffee, relax, and let’s dive in!

For the Spanish version Scroll down to the end

Shift Your Mindset and Embrace Imperfection

Learning a new language is a rollercoaster ride with its ups and downs. Instead of getting frustrated with every mistake, embrace them as valuable learning opportunities.

Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and they should be celebrated rather than feared. Don’t be afraid to make errors when speaking or writing in Spanish. As the famous writer Neil Gaiman once said, “Make new mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before.” So, don’t be too hard on yourself! Remember, everybody starts in the same place and goes through the same struggles.

Native speakers appreciate your efforts and are usually delighted to help you improve. Making mistakes means you’re pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and actively learning.

Set Realistic Goals and Celebrate Milestones

Break down your Spanish learning journey into achievable goals. Whether it’s mastering a particular verb tense, expanding your vocabulary, or holding a conversation with a native speaker, setting realistic goals will give you a sense of direction and purpose. And don’t forget to celebrate your milestones! Every victory, no matter how big or small, deserves recognition.

It could be successfully ordering food in Spanish at a restaurant or understanding a joke in a Spanish movie. Treat yourself with a little fiesta to acknowledge your progress.

“The secret to language learning lies in embracing the frustrations as valuable stepping stones on your journey to fluency.”

Benny Lewis, Language Hacker

Find joy in language immersion

Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture as much as possible. Surround yourself with authentic Spanish content, such as books, movies, TV shows, and music. Explore Spanish cuisine, connect with native speakers through language exchange platforms or local meetups, and embrace the beauty of the language. Remember, language learning is not just about grammar and vocabulary; it’s about discovering new worlds and connecting with people.

Mix it Up with varied learning strategies

Don’t let monotony dampen your enthusiasm! Mix up your learning strategies to keep things fresh and exciting. Combine traditional methods like textbooks and online courses with interactive tools like language learning apps, podcasts, and online resources (if you want to check a couple of good apps check my las IG post). Experiment with different techniques such as flashcards, mnemonic devices, and language exchanges. By diversifying your learning approach, you’ll find what works best for you and stay motivated along the way.

Seeking Support: Learning Together is Better

Remember, you’re not alone in this language learning journey! Seek out a community of fellow learners, language exchange partners, or join online forums and language groups. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can provide motivation, support, and a sense of camaraderie. Share your frustrations, seek guidance, and celebrate each other’s achievements. Together, you’ll find strength and encouragement to overcome any obstacles.

Some final thoughts

Language learning frustration is a common roadblock, but it doesn’t have to derail your progress. Embrace the challenges, set realistic expectations, and infuse your learning journey with fun and positivity. Celebrate each milestone, learn from your mistakes, and seek support from fellow language enthusiasts. Remember, the joy of mastering a new language far outweighs any momentary frustration. So, keep your spirits high, wear that smile proudly, and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Spanish! ¡Vamos!

¡Y no olvides celebrar tus logros!

¡Vamos!

Subjunctive Unleashed: Your Easy Guide to Mastering It Like a Pro!

Subjunctive Unleashed: Your Easy Guide to Mastering It Like a Pro!

Hola mis queridos lectores, If you’ve reached the advanced stage of learning Spanish, you’ve probably encountered the elusive and mysterious realm of the subjunctive and probably is driving you nuts, right? Don’t worry,  I’ve got your back! In this blog post, we’re going to take a deep dive into the subjunctive mood, demystify its rules, and equip you with the tools to conquer it with confidence. Get ready to unleash the power of the subjunctive and take your Spanish skills to the next level!

Breaking Down the Subjunctive Beast

Let’s kick things off by understanding what the subjunctive actually is. Simply put, it’s a mood used to express uncertainty, doubt, desires, possibilities, and hypothetical situations. Sounds simple, right? Once you grasp its basic principles, you’ll be able to wield the subjunctive like a linguistic ninja. Remember, it’s not as scary as it seems!

The Mighty Subjunctive Rules

Now, let’s jump into the nitty-gritty of the subjunctive rules. We won’t overwhelm you with all the intricacies, but I’ll cover the essentials. The subjunctive is triggered by certain expressions, such as wishes (Ojalá,Deseo que, espero que, quiero que) recommendations (te recomiendo que), doubts (Always nevgative ones as “No creo que,no pienso que, no estoy seguro/a que) and emotions (me gusta que, me enoja que, disfruto que). When the main clause expresses wishes, influence, doubt, etc. the subjunctive comes into play in the subordinate clause, or in simple words after the “que”. Keep your eyes open for those trigger words Like “que”, and you’ll be well on your way to subjunctive mastery!

Taming the Subjunctive Beast: Practice Makes Perfect

To truly conquer the subjunctive, practice is key! Familiarize yourself with common phrases and verbs that often require the subjunctive mood. Take the time to expose yourself to authentic Spanish content, like books, movies, and music, which will help you internalize the subjunctive naturally. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and mastering the subjunctive takes time and dedication. Stay consistent, and you’ll soon see progress.

Español or Castellano: What’s in a big Name?

Español or Castellano: What’s in a big Name?

Hey there,  If you’ve ever found yourself in a conversation about the Spanish language, you might have stumbled upon the ongoing debate about whether to call it Español or Castellano. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Is way more frequent than what you think.  In this blog post, we’re going to dive into this intriguing linguistic debate and explore the different perspectives surrounding it. So, grab your favorite beverage and let’s unravel the mystery together!

A Brief Historical Journey

Let’s take a trip back in time, shall we? The roots of this debate can be traced back to the history of Spain itself. During the medieval era, the Kingdom of Castilla played a crucial role in the unification of the Iberian Peninsula, and its language, known as Castellano, became the foundation of modern Spanish. Some argue that using “Castellano” is more historically accurate and pays homage to the linguistic origins of the language. However, as Spanish expanded beyond the borders of Castilla, it absorbed regional variations and influences, giving birth to the wonderfully diverse Spanish we know today.

The Rise of Español

Fast forward to the present day, you’ll find that the term “Español” has gained widespread usage, especially in international contexts. The Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española or RAE), the institution responsible for regulating the language, officially recognizes both terms as valid. However, they have endorsed “Español” as the more inclusive term, acknowledging the linguistic diversity and different variants spoken in various Spanish-speaking countries. In academic and diplomatic circles, “Español” has become the go-to term.

Español or Castellano? A Matter of Context and Personal Preference

At the end of the day, the choice between “Español” and “Castellano” often depends on context and personal perspective. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Language is a living, evolving entity shaped by various influences over time. Regardless of which term you use, it’s essential to appreciate the richness of the language and foster mutual respect among speakers of different Spanish variants. After all, communication and understanding are what truly matter.

“The debate between ‘Español’ and ‘Castellano’ may seem like a maze, but let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture: language is about connection and unity. Let’s celebrate our linguistic diversity while embracing the shared bond that the Spanish language brings us.”
